Key points
- Even small aquariums hold enough water to soak a floor and the ceiling below.
- Common failures: cracked seams, failed silicone, overflowing filters, and bumped tank stands.
- Fish-tank water carries bacteria and waste — treat it as contaminated.
- Hardwood and laminate swell quickly even from a slow leak.
Signs of a leak
- Damp carpet or warped flooring under or near the tank
- Water stains on the ceiling of the room below
- Tank water level dropping without evaporation explaining it
- Musty smell near the stand or in the room below
First steps
- Move fish to a backup tank or bucket with aerated water.
- Drain and move the tank off the wet area.
- Photograph everything before you clean up.
- Pull up wet carpet pad where you can — see wet carpet restoration.
What the water does
We map how far the water traveled with FLIR thermal cameras and moisture meters, then dry subfloor, wall cavities and the ceiling below if needed. Hardwood and laminate often need removal — see hardwood floor water damage, laminate and vinyl, and ceiling water damage. Vault documents the damage, records daily moisture readings, scopes in Xactimate, and bills State Farm, USAA, Allstate, Farmers, and Bear River Mutual directly.
Common questions
How can I prevent an aquarium leak?
Use a level stand rated for the full weight of the filled tank, check silicone seams each time you clean, leave a drip loop in every power cord, and do not overfill a sump. An inexpensive water leak alarm on the floor next to the stand gives early warning — see leak detectors and shut-off valves.
The stand smells musty. Is that mold?
It may be. Many stands are particleboard, which swells and can grow mold when splashes and drips soak in over time. Check the underside and back panel and the floor beneath. Growth on the floor or wall behind the stand means water has been reaching the structure.
Is a fish tank leak covered by insurance?
A tank that suddenly cracks or bursts is often treated as a sudden and accidental water loss. A seam that seeped for weeks may be treated as gradual — see sudden vs. gradual water damage. General information, not insurance advice.
