Warning signs
- Bubbling, peeling, or stained wallpaper.
- Musty smell near a specific wall.
- Paneling on basement walls that feels cool or damp.
- Vinyl wall coverings trap moisture against drywall.
Why it hides there
Wallpaper paste and drywall paper are food for mold, and vinyl coverings block moisture from escaping. Basement paneling is often installed directly over damp concrete or furring strips. Mold can grow for a long time before it shows on the surface.
What not to do
- Don’t peel large sections dry — it can release spores
- Don’t paint or paper over it
- Don’t assume a stain is old without checking moisture
How it’s handled
- Moisture readings and thermal imaging to find the wet area.
- Containment if the area is significant.
- Removal of the covering and affected drywall or paneling.
- Cleaning and drying of framing; fixing the moisture source.
- Clearance before new finishes go up.
Vault’s AMRT-certified crew performs post-remediation clearance; air samples go to Sporecyte, an outside lab. Inspections start at $99; remediation starts at $500.
