Common causes
- Cold exterior walls — condensation forms behind packed clothes in winter.
- Poor airflow — closed doors and crowded shelves trap humidity.
- Hidden leaks — a bathroom, water heater, or plumbing wall next to the closet.
- Damp items stored away — wet shoes, coats, or laundry.
Small spots: what you can do
- Empty the closet and check every wall, the floor, and the ceiling
- Wash affected clothing; dry-clean what can’t be washed
- Clean small spots on hard, sealed surfaces with detergent and water, then dry
- Leave the door open or use louvered doors for airflow
- Keep items a few inches off exterior walls
When it’s more than surface mold
- The wall feels damp or soft
- Mold keeps coming back after cleaning
- The closet shares a wall with a bathroom, laundry room, or water heater
- The patch is larger than about 10 square feet
Those usually mean moisture inside the wall. Vault uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find it, then removes damaged materials under containment if needed. See how to tell if you have mold.
