Why the Type of Water Damage Matters
Water damage is classified into three categories based on contamination level. These categories affect the risks, equipment, and safety protocols needed during restoration:
- Category 1 – Clean Water
- Category 2 – Grey Water
- Category 3 – Black Water
Category 1: Clean Water
Clean water damage comes from sanitary sources and poses the least risk if addressed quickly. This is the easiest to restore and often includes:
- Burst supply pipes
- Overflowing sinks or tubs (no contaminants)
- Melting snow or rainwater that hasn’t contacted ground or waste
⚠️ Note: If not dried quickly, clean water can turn into grey or black water within 24–48 hours due to bacteria or mold growth.
Category 2: Grey Water
Grey water contains moderate contaminants that may cause illness or discomfort upon contact. It requires safe removal and disinfection.
- Dishwasher or washing machine leaks
- Toilet overflows (without solid waste)
- Water from sinks, showers, or bathtubs

Category 3: Black Water
This is the most dangerous type of water damage. Black water contains bacteria, viruses, and contaminants that pose serious health risks.
- Sewage backups
- Flood water from rivers or streets
- Storm surge or groundwater
Black water requires professional biohazard cleanup and full structural drying.
