Signs to look for
- A musty smell that gets stronger when you’re close to the floor.
- Damp or cool spots in the carpet.
- Dark staining on the back of the carpet or the tack strip.
- Allergy symptoms that are worse in one room.
Can moldy carpet be saved?
- Carpet pad: almost always replaced once it’s been wet long enough to grow mold
- Carpet: sometimes saved after a quick clean-water leak; usually not if it’s moldy or the water was dirty
- Subfloor and tack strip: need to be checked and dried, and cleaned or replaced if mold has grown
Why it happens
Carpet pad acts like a sponge. Water from a leak, a washing machine overflow, or a wet basement can sit in the pad for days even when the top of the carpet feels dry. In basements, it’s common after spring runoff — see mold in basements.
What to do
- Find and stop the water source.
- Lift a corner of the carpet to check the pad and subfloor.
- Photograph everything for insurance.
- Don’t run household fans over moldy carpet — they spread spores.
- Call for an inspection if the area is large or the smell won’t go away.
