Check these first
- Dry floor drains or unused sinks — pour water in to refill the trap.
- Toilet wax ring — see toilet leaking at the base.
- Laundry standpipe and basement drains.
- If you smell gas (natural gas, not sewer), leave and call the gas company.
Other causes
- Blocked or cracked plumbing vent
- Cracked drain or cast iron pipe — see cast iron drain failure
- Slow sewer backups
- Sewer lateral problems — see sewer camera inspection
When it’s more than a smell
Wet floors, gurgling drains, or water coming up from drains mean a backup. Stay away from the water — see sewage health risks and sewer backup — what to do.
