The test
- Turn off every faucet and water-using appliance.
- Find the meter — usually in a box near the street.
- Watch the leak indicator (a small dial or triangle) or note the reading.
- Wait 1–2 hours with no water use and read it again.
If the meter moved
- Shut off the house main valve and recheck — if it stops, the leak is inside the house.
- If it keeps moving, the leak may be in the service line between the meter and the house.
- Check toilets first — dye tablets in the tank show silent leaks.
- Check irrigation lines separately if they’re on the same meter.
