Sump pump failed — do this now
- Don’t walk into standing water until power to the basement is off at the breaker.
- Check the obvious: is the pump plugged in, is the breaker or GFCI tripped, is the float stuck?
- If it won’t restart, a rented or borrowed utility pump can keep water from rising.
- Move belongings up and out of the water.
- Photograph everything for insurance.
- Call Vault at (385) 250-2825 for extraction and drying.
Why sump pumps fail
- Power outage — often during the same storm that’s raising the water.
- Stuck float switch — debris or the pump shifting in the pit.
- Clogged intake or discharge line — dirt, gravel, or a frozen discharge line in winter.
- Undersized pump that can’t keep up during snowmelt or heavy rain.
- Age — pumps wear out, and many are never tested until they’re needed.
- Missing check valve, letting pumped water fall back into the pit.

Backup options worth knowing
- Battery backup pump — a second pump that runs when power fails.
- Water-powered backup — uses municipal water pressure; no electricity needed.
- High-water alarm — a cheap sensor that warns you before the basement floods.
- Generator for longer outages.
Test it twice a year
- Pour a bucket of water into the pit.
- The float should rise and the pump should start on its own.
- Check that water is discharged outside, well away from the foundation.
- Check that the discharge line isn’t frozen or blocked in winter.
Typical Utah cost
| Scope | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Unfinished basement, extraction and drying | $1,500-$4,000 |
| Finished basement, one or two rooms | $4,000-$9,000 |
| Finished basement, full level | $8,000-$18,000+ |
Insurance
Standard homeowner’s policies often exclude water that backs up or overflows from a sump. Many insurers offer a water backup / sump overflow endorsement for a small added premium. Check your policy before you need it. See what insurance covers.
