Mold Air Sampling Explained

Key points

  • Air samples count mold spores in a measured volume of air.
  • Indoor results are compared to an outdoor sample taken at the same time.
  • It doesn’t find the source — moisture mapping and inspection do that.
  • Most useful for hidden mold questions and for clearance after remediation.

How it works

  1. A pump pulls a set volume of air through a spore trap cassette.
  2. Samples are taken in the area of concern and outdoors as a baseline.
  3. An outside lab counts and identifies spore types.
  4. Results are compared: indoor levels and types that differ from outdoors suggest an indoor source.

What it can’t tell you

  • Exactly where the mold is
  • Whether mold is growing inside a sealed wall cavity
  • Whether a specific health symptom is caused by mold
  • A single “safe” number — there are no federal limits for mold spores

When it’s worth it

  • A musty smell with no visible mold
  • After a leak, to check whether hidden growth may be present
  • Clearance after remediation, to confirm the work area is clean
  • Real estate or rental disputes where documentation matters

Vault’s $349 inspection tier includes air sampling analyzed by Sporecyte, an outside lab. Post-remediation clearance is performed by our AMRT-certified crew. See do I need mold testing?
