Key points
- A HEPA air purifier can capture mold spores floating in the air.
- It does nothing about mold growing on drywall, wood or carpet.
- Mold keeps growing as long as the moisture source is there.
- Fix the moisture, remove the growth, then a purifier can help with air quality.
What a purifier can do
A good HEPA purifier pulls air through a fine filter that traps particles, including mold spores. In a room with a known small problem — while you wait for a fix — it can lower what you breathe in.
What it can’t do
- Remove growth. Mold on the back of drywall, in a closet corner or under carpet keeps growing and releasing spores. See mold on drywall and mold under carpet.
- Fix moisture. A leak or damp basement keeps feeding it — see ideal indoor humidity.
- Remove the smell source. A musty smell means growth somewhere — see musty smell in the house.
How professionals use air filtration
During remediation, HEPA machines run inside sealed containment to create negative air pressure, so spores disturbed during removal are captured and don’t spread to the rest of the home. That is a different job from a room purifier. See air scrubbing and HEPA filtration and negative air containment.
What solves the problem
- Find the growth and the moisture behind it — see mold inspection pricing.
- Fix the moisture source.
- Remove or clean the growth under containment.
- Check clearance afterwards.

Common questions
What about ozone generators?
The EPA advises against using ozone generators in occupied spaces. Ozone can irritate the lungs, and at levels that are safe to breathe it does not effectively remove mold.
Which kind of air purifier should I buy?
A true HEPA purifier sized for the room. Check the clean air delivery rate (CADR) against the room size on the box.
Will a purifier get rid of a musty smell?
A carbon filter can reduce odors for a while, but the smell comes from growth somewhere, and it returns until that growth and the moisture behind it are dealt with.
