Ice dams are a winter problem that shows up indoors. Meltwater backs up behind a ridge of ice on the roof, gets under the shingles and ends up in the attic and ceilings. Vault handled an ice dam loss in Rock Canyon in February 2026.

- February 2026
- What happened
- An ice dam formed along a roof valley in winter, sending water into the attic insulation and the upstairs hallway ceiling.

- Drywall removal and framing drying.
How ice dams cause water damage, and how to prevent them
An ice dam forms when heat escaping into the attic warms the roof deck and melts the snow on top. The meltwater runs down to colder parts of the roof, like the eaves or a valley, and refreezes into a ridge of ice. More meltwater pools behind that ridge and works its way under the shingles.
- Reduce heat loss into the attic. Good insulation, sealed attic bypasses (around lights, vents and the attic hatch) and proper attic ventilation keep the roof deck colder and stop the melt-refreeze cycle.
- Clear snow from the lower edge of the roof with a roof rake from the ground after heavy snowfall. Don’t climb onto an icy roof.
- Watch valleys and eaves. Icicles hanging from gutters and ice building up in valleys are early warning signs.
- If water comes in, catch the drip, keep people out from under any sagging ceiling, and call for drying. Wet ceiling drywall and framing need to be dried properly, or they can grow mold once temperatures warm up.
If it happens in your Rock Canyon home
- Stop the water at the fixture’s shut-off valve, or at the main if you can’t find the source.
- Stay safe. Keep away from water near outlets, cords or the electrical panel, and from any ceiling that’s sagging.
- Photograph everything before you move anything, for your insurance claim.
- Move belongings off wet floors, and leave the carpet and drywall in place so moisture readings can be taken first.
- Call (385) 250-2825. We log the time we answer and the time we arrive on your work order.
