A bathtub left running for a few extra minutes can put a surprising amount of water into the floor. In June 2026 a second-floor tub overflowed in a Provost home and the water came through the kitchen ceiling below. Vault opened the ceiling and dried the framing.

Bathtub overflows and wet ceilings below

A tub’s overflow drain can’t keep up with a faucet running at full flow. Once water goes over the rim, it runs under the tub and the flooring, through the subfloor and into the ceiling of the room below.

  • Shut off the faucet and pull the plug, then mop up what’s on the bathroom floor.
  • Check the ceiling below. Stains, bubbling paint or sagging drywall mean water is sitting in the ceiling cavity. Stay out from under it and turn off any light fixture in that area.
  • Why the ceiling gets opened: water trapped above drywall sits on the joists and insulation where it can’t evaporate. Removing the wet drywall lets the hidden framing dry fully.
  • Check the bathroom floor too. Water under vinyl or tile and in the subfloor needs moisture readings, even if the surface looks dry.

If it happens in your Provost home

  1. Stop the water at the fixture’s shut-off valve, or at the main if you can’t find the source.
  2. Stay safe. Keep away from water near outlets, cords or the electrical panel, and from any ceiling that’s sagging.
  3. Photograph everything before you move anything, for your insurance claim.
  4. Move belongings off wet floors, and leave the carpet and drywall in place so moisture readings can be taken first.
  5. Call (385) 250-2825. We log the time we answer and the time we arrive on your work order.
