What drives sewage cleanup cost

  1. Square footage affected. One bathroom floor is a small job; a flooded basement with carpet is a large job.
  2. Dwell time. Sewage caught in hour 1 limits the demo scope. Sewage that sat overnight soaks into subfloor and lower drywall, expanding the removal.
  3. Materials in the path. Carpet + pad are always discarded. Lower drywall below the waterline is cut out. Insulation is removed. Hard surfaces are cleaned.
  4. Containment complexity. Walled-off work in a basement is simpler than cross-floor containment where sewage reached multiple levels.
  5. Disposal. Biohazard waste disposal is more expensive than standard construction debris (bagged, documented, hauled by licensed carrier).
  6. Clearance. ATP swab testing verifies decontamination before any reconstruction.
  7. Sewer line repair. Snaking is cheap; hydro-jetting is mid-range; dig-and-replace of a collapsed line can run $3,000-$10,000+ on its own.

Insurance coverage for sewage

Standard Utah homeowner’s policies exclude sewer backup unless you have the sewer-and-drain backup endorsement. The endorsement is cheap ($50-$100/year) but most homeowners don’t have it until after their first backup.

  • Have the endorsement: covered up to the endorsement cap (often $5,000-$25,000). Your deductible applies.
  • Don’t have it: paid out of pocket, or financed through Wisetack ($500-$25,000, soft credit check, 3-24 months). See financing.

Note: NFIP flood insurance does not cover sewer backup. The endorsement is specifically on your homeowner’s policy.
