Wet cabinets — the short answer
- Solid wood or plywood boxes caught early can usually be dried in place.
- Particleboard or MDF that has swollen doesn’t go back to shape — that part gets replaced.
- The hidden problem is behind and under the cabinets — wall, toe-kick cavity, and subfloor stay wet long after the visible surfaces dry.

How pros dry behind cabinets
- Remove the toe-kick panel to open the cavity under the cabinets.
- Measure moisture in the cabinet floor, back panel, wall, and subfloor.
- Force dry air into the cavity with air movers and a dehumidifier — sometimes through small holes drilled in the back panel.
- Pull the cabinets only when the wall or subfloor behind them can’t be dried in place or mold is found.
- Read daily until materials match the dry standard. See structural drying explained.
