Short answer
- Standard policies often exclude water that backs up through sewers or drains.
- A water backup / sewer backup endorsement is usually what covers it — often with its own limit.
- Check your declarations page for an endorsement and its dollar limit.
- General information, not insurance advice.
Why it matters
Sewer backup is Category 3 water — it carries bacteria and has to be removed, not just dried. Porous materials it touches (carpet, pad, drywall, insulation) usually come out. That makes these jobs more expensive than clean-water leaks. See water categories explained and sewage cleanup cost in Utah.
Common causes
- Roots or a collapsed section in your private sewer lateral
- Grease and wipes clogging the line
- Heavy storms overloading the city system
- A blockage in the city main (the city may be responsible — report it)
Vault does sewer line work in-house under the same license — snaking, hydro-jetting, camera inspection, and repair. See sewer line camera inspection.
What to do now
- Stop using water in the house — every flush and drain adds to the backup.
- Keep people and pets out of the affected area.
- Photograph everything.
- Call your insurer to ask about a backup endorsement.
- Call (385) 250-2825 for cleanup. See sewer backup — what to do.
