Front-Load Washer Mold and Musty Smell

Where it grows

  • The rubber door gasket — water and lint collect in the folds.
  • The detergent dispenser.
  • The drain pump filter.
  • Behind the drum in neglected machines.

Cleaning

  1. Wipe the gasket folds with detergent and water; dry them.
  2. Remove and clean the dispenser drawer.
  3. Clean the drain pump filter per the manual.
  4. Run the manufacturer’s cleaning cycle.
  5. Leave the door and dispenser open between loads.

Prevention

  • Use HE detergent in the recommended amount
  • Remove wet laundry promptly
  • Wipe the gasket after the last load of the day

Leak warning signs

Water under the machine, a torn gasket, or swollen flooring nearby can mean a leak — see washing machine overflow. A water sensor behind the washer is cheap insurance — see leak detectors.
