Key points
- Expansion tanks absorb water that expands when it’s heated.
- The internal bladder can fail — the tank waterlogs and stops working.
- Rust at the fitting or seams can leak onto the floor.
- A failed tank can make the water heater relief valve drip.
Simple test
Tap the tank. The top half should sound hollow and the bottom half solid. If it sounds solid all the way up, it’s likely waterlogged. A plumber can confirm and check the air charge.
Signs of trouble
- Rust or water at the tank connection
- Relief valve dripping on the water heater
- Pressure spikes — see high water pressure
- Water pooling in the utility room
See water heater maintenance. If water spread under flooring or into walls, call (385) 250-2825.
