Key points
- There is no fixed number of days; it depends on how far the sewage spread and what it soaked into.
- Porous materials that touch sewage — carpet, pad, drywall, insulation — are usually removed, not cleaned.
- Work is done under sealed containment, with negative air where appropriate, and PPE.
- Drying is measured, and repairs start once materials are dry. Free written estimate.
What decides the timeline
- How far it spread — one floor drain area or a whole finished basement.
- What it touched — concrete can be cleaned; carpet, pad and the bottom of drywall usually come out.
- The cause — a blocked or broken sewer line has to be cleared or repaired before the space can be used. Vault does sewer line work in-house: snaking, hydro-jetting, camera inspection and repair.
- Drying — what remains is dried and checked with moisture meters.
The stages
- Safety and containment. The area is sealed off; the crew wears PPE. See sewage backup health risks.
- Extraction. Sewage and water are removed.
- Removal. Contaminated porous materials come out.
- Cleaning and disinfection of hard surfaces.
- Drying, logged daily until materials reach dry standard — see structural drying.
- Repairs. Vault handles reconstruction as a licensed Utah general contractor.
Cost and insurance
Every sewage job starts with a free written estimate — see sewage cleanup cost. Standard homeowner policies usually exclude sewer backup unless an endorsement was added — see sewer backup coverage. General information, not insurance advice.

Common questions
Can I use the rest of the house during cleanup?
Often, yes, because the work area is sealed off. Avoid using any drains until the sewer line has been cleared and is confirmed flowing.
When can I flush toilets again?
Only after the line has been cleared and tested. Flushing before that can push more sewage into the area being cleaned.
How is the cut line on the drywall decided?
By how high the sewage reached and how far moisture wicked up the wall, checked with moisture meters. Drywall is removed above that line so no contaminated or wet material is left in the wall.
