Toilet Backing Up Into the Shower or Tub

Key points

  • When you flush and water rises in the tub or shower, the main sewer line is usually blocked.
  • Stop using water anywhere in the house — the next flush may overflow.
  • The line needs clearing; a camera inspection shows why it blocked.
  • Any sewage that came up is Category 3 and needs proper cleanup.

Why it happens

The toilet, tub and shower drain into the same main line. When that line is blocked further down — by roots, grease, wipes or a sag — water from a flush has nowhere to go and comes up the lowest nearby drain, often the tub or shower. A basement floor drain can back up the same way — see floor drain backing up.

What to do right now

  1. Stop using water — no flushing, showers, laundry or dishwasher.
  2. Don’t use chemical drain cleaners on a main line clog.
  3. Keep people and pets away from any water that came up.
  4. Call to have the line cleared.

How it’s fixed

Vault does sewer line work in-house under our Utah general contractor license (DOPL #11876543-5501): snaking, hydro-jetting, camera inspection, and repair or replacement of damaged sections. The camera shows whether roots or a broken pipe will cause it again. See sewer line camera inspection and sewer line services.

If sewage reached the floor

Water from a backed-up drain is contaminated. Small amounts in a tub can be cleaned; anything on carpet, drywall or a finished floor needs proper cleanup — see can I clean up sewage myself. To lower the risk next time, read preventing sewer backups.

Common questions

Why do my drains gurgle?

Gurgling when a toilet flushes or a tub drains means air is being pushed through the traps by a partial blockage. It is often an early warning before a full backup.

Will a plunger fix it?

Not when the main line is blocked. If more than one fixture is affected — a toilet and a tub, or water rising in a floor drain — the blockage is past the individual drains and the main line has to be cleared.

Is it the city’s problem or mine?

In many cities the homeowner is responsible for the sewer lateral running from the house to the city main. Ask your city what it covers; a camera inspection shows where the problem is.
