The Loss Event

The homeowners had started the dishwasher before going to bed on September 17. Reconstruction Scope

Key Learnings

  • Braided stainless supply hoses have documented service life of 5 to 10 years but are frequently retained through kitchen and bathroom remodels — hose replacement is a $10 to $30 item that’s easy to overlook when the rest of the appliance or fixture is being upgraded. This is a preventable failure mode with proactive replacement.
  • Overnight dishwasher, washing machine, and ice maker operation while occupants are asleep or absent is a significant risk multiplier. Some homeowners have adopted the practice of only running these appliances while home and awake, or installing appliance-specific water shutoff valves that close automatically when the appliance cycle is complete.
